Wautier Carpets (pronounced woa-tea-air) is a boutique Australian studio dedicated to the art of bespoke carpet and rug making. Led by industry specialists, we collaborate with architects and designers to deliver tailored, design-driven flooring solutions — from custom Axminster and hand-tufted carpets to curated European collections. Our focus on integrity, materiality, and innovation positions Wautier at the intersection of craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Wautier Carpets was founded by Chris Walters, who grew up watching his mother, Mavis Walters, hand-stitch carpets for the family company SA Felts in Port Adelaide, beginning in 1952. Inspired by this heritage of making, Chris launched Wautier Carpets to honour his family’s dedication to craftsmanship — reinterpreting tradition through modern design and technique.

With decades of experience across Whitecliffe Imports and Tsar Carpets, Chris brings both technical mastery and creative sensibility to the studio. What began as a small atelier producing a handful of projects each year has evolved into a trusted collaborator for leading design firms across Australia, renowned for an intuitive understanding of design intent and architectural context.

At its core, Wautier Carpets is powered by a team whose combined experience spans more than a century. Alongside Chris, Maggie Keys — formerly of Brintons — brings an exceptional understanding of woven Axminster construction, while Dean Blackborough, whose career includes senior roles at Tarkett, Gerflor, Belgotex, PKF, and Aflor Commercial, contributes deep insight into large-scale hospitality and commercial projects.

Together, they embody the Wautier philosophy: to create carpets that are not merely surfaces, but integral design elements — architectural, tactile, and enduring.
