Have you ever wondered how many plastic bottles are flowing in the sea? It is expected that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Plastic has become an integral part of our lives; most packaging materials are made of plastic, and unfortunately, many consumers are not responsible for their own waste. Additionally, we have witnessed a significant amount of plastic waste being discarded into our beautiful natural environments, leading to pollution.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), plastic constitutes 80% of all marine debris found in various water bodies, ranging from surface waters to deep-sea sediments. Marine species ingest or become entangled in plastic debris, resulting in severe injuries.
Carpet Maker has recognized the gravity of this issue and is determined to contribute towards saving our planet's seas. We aspire to be the catalyst for spreading this crucial message and raising awareness among people worldwide. It is for these reasons that we have embarked on our project called "MONSILK."
Certainly, some of you may be wondering, what exactly is MONSILK? MONSILK stands for "Mind Our Nature & Soft as Silk" collection. Our goal is to actively contribute to the preservation of our world's natural environment. Each year, billions of kilograms of plastic end up in the ocean, posing a severe threat to marine life. In light of this, we discovered an innovative method of transforming plastic bottles into yarn.
Inspired by this breakthrough, we had a brilliant idea—to create yarn from ocean-plastic waste and turn it into masterpieces. For instance, take a look at the Earth carpet (pictured above), which is upcycled from 1,128 plastic bottles, each with a size of 600 ml. By creating these carpets, we demonstrate how a single piece can play a part in saving the seas by transforming waste into a work of art.
Since then, we have wholeheartedly committed ourselves to our plan and are dedicated to achieving our desired outcome. To provide a clear overview of our process, we have divided it into three steps.
Firstly, we begin by collecting plastic bottles from the sea, carefully categorizing them by plastic type, and thoroughly cleaning them. Next, we proceed to transform the bottles into chips through a meticulous process. These chips are then fed into our spinning machines, where they are transformed into different types of yarn.
Last but certainly not least, we are thrilled to announce that our special yarn is available in a wide range of captivating shades for you to choose from. We are excited to introduce our Pom box which offers an impressive selection of 64 shades.
